Program Outline

PGY-1 and 2

During the first two years, the residents rotate through the otolaryngology services of the four hospitals (6 months) as well as other related medical, surgical, and diagnostic services related to otolaryngology (17 months) and 1 month of elective time.

The residents participate in the academic programs provided by the PGME office, the Department of Surgery, and the Division of Otolaryngology, as well as the various host services. Much of the material is directed towards preparing for the Principles of Surgery examinations and based on the CanMEDS competencies.

PGY 3 to 5
During the final three years, the residents perform longer ENT rotations at all four Calgary hospitals and perform 3 months of electives and a 3-month selective.

The academic program consists of a didactic lecture and seminar series, the Department of Surgery and PGME CanMEDS lectures, Grand Rounds, hospital rounds, and journal clubs. A protected academic half-day is provided for lectures and seminars. A temporal bone laboratory and temporal bone dissection course will be provided. The Canadian Otolaryngology In-training Examination and divisional oral examinations are held annually. Theory and practical training in auditory and vestibular testing are provided. Residents gain experience in the voice laboratory and various multidisciplinary clinics (cancer clinic, pediatric and adult subspecialty clinics).

Research
A clinical or basic science research project is to be completed annually and presented at the Division's research day and at other venues as is appropriate. Basic financial support is provided by the division and the university for the performance and presentation of resident research, including attendance at provincial, national or international meetings.
