Seminars and Rounds

Seminars in basic science, anatomy, pathology, and clinical problems are presented weekly. Courses in critical thinking, ethics and educational skills are offered throughout the program. This educational time is protected by employment of "physician extenders" to provide patient care.

Research
A program on critical literature appraisal and research design is offered in the PGY-1 year. For the remaining years, ongoing participation in research projects is a mandatory part of the
general surgery training program in Calgary. Residents are expected to initiate a research project under the guidance of the faculty. These research projects are presented on an annual basis. The residents have access to a computer lab with internet capability. The Office of Surgical Research will assist in study design and statistical analysis. Residents with an interest in research can apply for the surgeon scientist program with salary funding for up to 2 years with the goal of obtaining a graduate degree.
