National Graduate Student Recruitment Drive

 

The Faculty of Medicine is hosting its annual National Recruitment of outstanding candidates for graduate studies. Are you interested in carrying out exciting, top notch research in the great Calgary setting towards a PhD degree? Do you want to see Calgary up close before committing? Then read on and apply!

Up to 12 top ranked applicants to our Drive will be flown to Calgary to meet potential supervisors and current graduate students, and visit Calgary, all expenses paid during Reading Week (February 22-25) 2012.

We are looking for highly motivated and qualified undergraduate students (in their final year of BSc) and graduate students (finishing their MSc program) interested in doctoral research in one of our 8 Graduate Programs at the University of Calgary:   

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Cardiovascular & Respiratory Sciences

Community Health Sciences

Gastrointestinal Sciences

Immunology

Medical Science (several specializations)

Microbiology & Infectious Diseases

Neuroscience

These programs cover all four Canadian Institutes of Health Research pillars from basic biomedical to clinical and population health research. Please click on the program of your interest to find out more about the research, supervisors in the program, their publications, funding available, and thesis requirements.

Are you interested in a career as clinician-scientist, and thinking of going to BOTH medical school and graduate school? Our Faculty is home to the joint MD/PhD Leaders in Medicine program, the second largest of its kind in Canada. Seek admission to one of the graduate programs and apply for admission to our medical school.  The Leaders in Medicine (LIM) program provides excellent opportunities for students, including funding, seminar series, and travel to scientific meetings.

Eligibility for applying to our National Recruitment Drive:

  • Student must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Landed Immigrant.
     
  • Completion of a BSc undergraduate or MSc graduate degree relevant to one of our graduate programs prior to July 2012 for September 2012 admission.
  •  A cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 out of 4.0 on the most recent 20 half courses in an undergraduate degree program and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 out for the Masters program.
  •  Submission of all necessary documents by 09 January 2012.


Application Process:

The application process is simple: collect the info requested (see below), generate electronic versions of these documents, and put them together as ONE Adobe Acrobat PDF file.

E-mail the following information as ONE Acrobat PDF file to Linka van As (medgse@ucalgary.ca): 

  1. Your C.V., including (summer) research experience, abstracts and/or publications, awards.
  2. Copy of your university transcripts.
  3. Letter from one faculty member who can comment on your aptitude for research. The reference letter must be on university letterhead and signed.
  4. Identify two of our graduate programs in the Faculty of Medicine of interest to you. (They will coodinate your trip).
  5. Identify at six to seven (6 - 7) potential supervisors who you would like to meet here in Calgary.
  6. For those interested in a combination of medical school and graduate school, please indicate this in your application package.

Top ranked applicants to the Drive will be informed by:                  January 23, 2012
Deadline to accept the invitation to come to Calgary:                      January 30, 2012
Trip to Calgary:                                                                                         February 22 - 25, 2012

Visit Schedule: (February 22 - 25, 2012)
 

Day One: Wednesday, February 22 - Arrival

Day Two: Thursday, February 23 - Introductions, tour of buildings, facilities and laboratories. Tour main campus and Olympic oval. Meet with potential supervisors.

Day Three: Friday, February 24 - Meet with potential supervisors, meet graduate program directors. Post-visit debriefing.

Day Four: Saturday, February 25 - Return home

 

Funding and Awards:

National Recruitment Drive applicants who register in one of our doctoral graduate programs with a September 2012 start date will receive an Achievers in Medical Science (AIMS) award.  This award provides a total stipend of $25,000 for the first year, and a supplement of $3,500 above program stipend levels for all subsequent years in program when the student holds a major external scholarship.
