Public Service Announcement: Free screening of The Sea Inside in Science in the Cinema

(Calgary, Alberta) Calgarians are invited to enjoy an evening of free popcorn, a movie and a discussion with medical experts. On Thursday, February 4, 2010, Alberta Innovates -Health Solutions is presenting The Sea Inside at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, 1133 Kensington Road NW.

A Spanish film with English subtitles, this Academy Award winning movie focuses on the true story of Ramon Sampedro, a quadriplegic who fought a 30 year campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity.

The film will be introduced by Patrick Whelan, PhD, an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research senior scholar, and Dr. Ian Mitchell, a bioethicist from the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine.

Following the movie presentation, Drs. Mitchell and Whelan will discuss the bioethical issues raised in the movie and the latest developments in spinal cord research.

Patrick Whelan, PhD, program leader of the Spinal Cord & Nerve Regeneration Group at the University of Calgary, has spent the past two decades doing spinal cord research. An associate professor in the faculties of medicine and veterinary medicine, his research investigates the organization and function of spinal cord networks that produce locomotion. These networks are essential for recovery of function following spinal cord injury.

Dr. Ian Mitchell is an award-winning teacher of bioethics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. His research in bioethics focuses on end-of-life issues, teenage decision-making, reproductive issues and new questions in home care. A professor of pediatrics and a specialist in lung disease in children, Dr. Mitchell is involved in various national bioethics initiatives.

"This Science in the Cinema program is part of our ongoing focus on science education, inviting people around the province - especially young people - to enjoy a night at the movies and to learn about on-the-ground research in Alberta," says Alberta Innovates -  Health Solutions Interim CEO Jacques Magnan, PhD. "Our thanks go out to the scientists who have been sharing their considerable expertise with Albertans."
